The necessity for further increases of efficiency is a global problem which all manufacturers of vehicles have to face due to the relationship of reduced fuel consumption to lowered CO2 emissions. Additionally, to this trend, axle oils must meet higher requirements of performance and durability while lowering the operating temperature. The power of modern engines in commercial vehicles has increased over the last years while the axle sizes remained constant, oil volume has been lowered and drain intervals have been extended. This increases the demands on the gear oils even more.
To address these requirements, Mercedes-Benz has published the specification MB 235.31.
