Ian Wilson - Technical Specialist
After recently retiring from FUCHS, with 20 rewarding years of service, I look back at the opportunities and experiences that the Company has provided to me. Starting off as a Technical Specialist back in 1999, never did I think I would have accomplished all that I have during my time with FUCHS.
Throughout the early years of my FUCHS career, it was clear that if you were willing to put the effort in, you would be rewarded. After 3 years being part of the Technical Support Team, I was offered the position of Chemical Process Management (CPM) Operations Manager – South, looking after the servicing taking place on our larger customers sites. This gave me the chance to display my managerial skills, as well as my technical knowledge to customers.
The biggest part of my FUCHS career began in 2006 however, when I grasped the chance to help grow the Mining Business in China. What was originally planned to be a 3-year project, extended into an 11-year secondment, helping to develop and grow the mining business for FUCHS China.
Being able to use my knowledge and experience and apply them in a different country seemed daunting at first. China’s economy grew at such a fast pace and the role was demanding, which made it challenging and enjoyable. Myself, and a team made up of Technical Specialists, Engineers and Sales People played a huge part in the success of a growing market for FUCHS, something which I consider to be one of my biggest accomplishments in my career.
Seeing my work and effort contribute to impressive growth and results for FUCHS China and the FUCHS Group has been without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my career, and I would do it all over again if given the chance.

Working at FUCHS UK on the Silkolene Brand has been a great journey for me so far.
One of the main attributes that FUCHS UK offer is the ability to grow as a person. I believe that no matter what part of the company you might work in, you are encouraged to bring new ideas to the table, offer alternative opinions and be given the chance to change things for the better. The only thing stopping you at FUCHS, is you.
In the short (ish) time I have worked at FUCHS UK – just reached my 10th year – I have been allowed to develop my career at the company. Starting as an area sales manager, I was able to prove myself and take on more responsibility over time and since moved on several times and now head up my own division within the company.
This was not because of any management training plan or fast track scheme, but through hard work alongside likeminded people, being able to make decisions (and mistakes) for the benefit of the company.
I am now directly involved in so many new parts of the Silkolene business, such as:
- Marketing activities
- Sponsorship agreements
- New product development
- Labels & artwork
- Point of sale
- Managing teams of people
- Reporting and preparing budgets
- Meeting international distributors & travel
To name but a few. And perhaps most importantly I am fortunate to be working alongside a great team of people day in and day out.
My Global role allows me to learn about exciting new markets, building strong relationships with FUCHS colleagues from all around the World. Learning about diverse cultures, adapting our sales strategies to meet local demands. Developing new products, varied sales strategies and offer our support to implement new initiatives.
One of the most enjoyable & challenging parts of my role is learning about new countries, with different cultures and sales environments, often having to overcome regional challenges to open new markets for the Silkolene Brand.
I work with many FUCHS colleagues from around the world and as a team we are able to facilitate real change. Working together to grow our international markets, through continuous product development and work together to find solutions for any perceived problems as and when they come along.
Not something I ever intended to do, but I am now doing things that I never thought I could do. Working at FUCHS means I am always looking forwards for what might come next!
I would recommend working with FUCHS to anyone that is prepared to get out what they put into their work.
Paul Littley - Executive Manager Global Research and Development
Paul Littley – Executive Manager – Global Research & Development
Working at FUCHS UK, I have held many positions over the last 35 years. Mainly working within Research & Development, but also managing the UK laboratory functions.
I started at FUCHS 35 years ago as a Development Chemist for Metalworking Fluids and quickly progressed to Leading the R&D Team, with European responsibilities for metal working fluids development.
As the FUCHS Organisation continued to grow, so did my involvement and responsibilities for the Group, taking on European Raw Material Manager and European Research &Development Co-ordinator.
In the UK I took responsibility as Technical Services Executive Manager for Research and Laboratory Services encompassing Quality Control Lab, Customer Service Laboratories, Product Health & Safety and Quality Procedures.
Today my position is Executive Manager – Global Research & Development, and have responsibility to coach and mentor our up and coming laboratory management teams.
The company I see as progressive and always moving in a positive direction, especially over the past 15 years, FUCHS UK has evolved beyond recognition. Since 1984, driven by local management, the company has made huge investments in facilities and people. This has paid off, we now have state of the art facilities and industry-best people resulting in more accreditations and supplier awards for service and innovation. This has made us the best company in our sector in the UK and gives unique advantages in my opinion.
Personally, I am proud to have contributed to the success of the UK and the FUCHS Group. My position has led me to head three of the Global teams as part of our Matrix structure. As head of Key Working Groups (Mining, Metal Working Fluids and Glass) and as a member of several other Key Working Groups I can share my experience in an open way and pass on the knowledge I have gained.
The FUCHS UK team have a high innovation level and excellent ways of working which I enjoy very much. Each day has many challenges, time goes very quickly and its always a case of some steps forward and some back but that’s the nature of Research and Development! I have never stopped learning at FUCHS and my aim is to keep moving forward!
