The electrification of transport is not only transforming propulsion systems, but also the technical requirements of every component that makes up a vehicle. In this new paradigm, thermal management has become a critical factor in ensuring the efficiency, safety and durability of electrical systems. FUCHS, a global leader in lubrication solutions, has developed a range of functional fluids specifically designed to meet the challenges of new mobility and aimed directly at automotive manufacturers.

One of the most complex challenges in electric vehicles is managing the heat generated by high-energy-density batteries and fast-charging systems. These elements, which are essential for range and user experience, require advanced thermal solutions that maintain optimal operating temperatures even under extreme conditions. In this context, FUCHS dielectric fluids not only act as heat transfer media, but also become functional components of the system, with a direct impact on the overall performance of the vehicle.

The FUCHS BluEV™ range

The FUCHS BluEV™ range includes thermal fluids specifically formulated for direct cooling applications in both batteries and chargers. These fluids must meet a series of very demanding technical requirements:

  • They must offer excellent thermal conductivity.
  • Guarantee electrical insulation in high-voltage environments
  • Be compatible with a wide variety of materials (from metals such as copper and aluminium to polymers and elastomers used in hoses and seals).
  • Maintain their chemical and physical stability over a wide temperature range, from -60°C to 140°C.

One of the most representative products in this line is FUCHS BluEV™ TF 9262, designed for directly cooled batteries and electrical components. This fluid offers optimised conductivity that dissipates electrical charges and prevents build-up, while ensuring superior compatibility with plastics and sealants. FUCHS BluEV™ TF 9318, on the other hand, has been developed specifically for charging systems, combining excellent electrical and thermal properties with a biodegradable formulation, which is a key advantage in the event of accidental leaks.

The importance of these fluids becomes even more apparent in electric chargers where cooling is achieved using flexible hoses. In these cases, the fluid must not only transfer heat efficiently, but also maintain its integrity against pressure, vibration and interaction with sensitive materials throughout the life of the equipment. Choosing the right fluid can make the difference between a reliable system and one that is prone to failure or premature degradation. FUCHS has worked closely with leading manufacturers to develop formulations that meet these specific needs, anticipating market trends and the most demanding regulatory requirements.

In addition to their technical performance, BluEV™ fluids also meet sustainability criteria. Many of them are biodegradable and have been formulated with selected base oils that minimize environmental impact. This feature is particularly relevant in a context where electric mobility is presented as a cleaner and more responsible solution, and where every component of the vehicle must contribute to that common goal.

Spain Boosts Industry with New Electric Battery Manufacturing Initiatives

Projects such as the gigafactories in Valencia, Extremadura, Catalonia and the Basque Country are set to position Spain as a strategic player in the European electromobility value chain. FUCHS will be present in this new ecosystem from the outset, contributing its experience, capacity for innovation and commitment to local development. “Our mission is to accompany these new companies from the design phase, offering solutions tailored to their specific needs, helping to make their products safer, more efficient and more sustainable, and contributing our global experience and local adaptability”, says Nuria Sala, Head of Marketing at FUCHS Lubricants, who adds that this commitment to proximity and collaboration is not new. “FUCHS has been working for years in its Chinese subsidiary with the leading manufacturers of batteries and electric vehicles. This international experience allows us to anticipate trends, validate technologies in real environments and transfer that knowledge to other emerging markets, such as Spain. The combination of global presence and local focus is one of our main strengths.”.

FUCHS' commitment to innovation in the field of electric mobility has recently materialised with the inauguration, together with E-Lyte Innovations, of the production plant for battery electrolyte solutions at its German headquarters. This facility, with a capacity of up to 20,000 tonnes per year, represents a milestone in the European production of high-performance electrolytes for lithium-ion, sodium and supercapacitor batteries.

In short, the electrification of the automobile poses new challenges that require innovative responses. Direct thermal management or combined with lubrication in the case of the battery and transmission assembly, far from being a secondary aspect, has become a central element in the design of electric vehicles. FUCHS, with its BluEV™ range, is proving to be at the forefront of this transformation, offering automotive manufacturers the tools they need to successfully meet the challenges of new mobility.
