FUCHS Bearing Lubrication Solutions for Extreme Operating Conditions: Guidelines for High‑Temperature / Heavy‑Load / Low‑Temperature / Multi‑Environment Adaptation

Bearings serve as the "joints" that keep equipment running reliably across industries including metallurgy, mining, paper‑making, chemical processing, automotive and new‑energy sectors. When equipment operates persistently under high‑temperature, heavy‑load, low‑temperature, humid, dusty or corrosive conditions, lubrication failure is often the primary cause of premature bearing failure and unplanned equipment downtime.

As an independent lubricant supplier with over 90 years of service to industrial sectors, FUCHS delivers systematic bearing lubrication solutions tailored to diverse extreme working conditions. Our products help you select the right grease and extend bearing service life.

I. High‑Temperature Operating Conditions

1. Lubrication Pain Points

Where bearings run at persistently elevated temperatures, even above 200 °C, the base oil of conventional grease undergoes accelerated evaporation and oxidation. The thickener structure breaks down, leaving grease hardened, coked or washed away. This pushes bearings into dry friction, triggering runaway temperature rise, aggravated wear, and even shaft seizure and shutdown. Typical high‑temperature applications include hot‑air fans, drum dryers, paper‑machine dryers, clutches, bearings for variable‑frequency air‑conditioning motors and water pumps.

2. Selection Key Points

High‑temperature grease must feature an elevated temperature resistance limit, outstanding high‑temperature durability and oxidation stability, plus sufficient base‑oil viscosity to maintain a robust oil film at high temperatures. Products formulated with synthetic oils such as ester oils, synthetic hydrocarbons, phenyl ethers or perfluoropolyethers, paired with heat‑resistant thickeners like polyurea and specialty lithium soaps, represent viable options.

3. FUCHS High‑Temperature Bearing Lubrication Solutions

FUCHS offers a graded product portfolio for varying levels of high‑temperature exposure:

  • TURMOGREASE Hitemp 2 WSHB: Maximum temperature resistance up to 260 °C, for rolling and sliding bearings under extreme heat.
  • TURMOTEMP LS 1502: Operates from ‑60 °C to 240 °C, combining extreme cold‑ and heat‑resistance.
  • TURMOTEMP LP 2502 / LP 5002 (perfluoropolyether‑based, 250 °C): For heavy‑load high‑temperature applications such as corrugator rolls and film stretching equipment.
  • TURMOTEMP II/400 KL (260 °C): For heavy‑load high‑temperature duties including corrugator rolls and rubber internal mixers.
  • GLEITMO 591 / 590: Delivers long‑service‑life lubrication under high‑temperature and corrosive influences, suitable for rolling and sliding bearings.

For high‑temperature applications that also require high‑speed performance, choose FUCHS BluEV EMG SP 2, TURMOGREASE N 803 B (low‑noise capable), SINTONO GPE 703 / 702, or TURMOGREASE PU 703.

II. Heavy‑Load Operating Conditions

1. Lubrication Pain Points

In metallurgical rolling mills, construction machinery, mining equipment, cement plants and chemical facilities, bearings sustain high static and shock loads. Oil films are easily ruptured, leading to direct metal‑to‑metal contact and severe wear. Under low‑speed heavy‑load conditions, grease struggles to reach friction zones, placing high demands on film‑forming capability and extreme‑pressure performance.

2. Selection Key Points

Greases for heavy‑load service must offer excellent extreme‑pressure anti‑wear properties, high base‑oil viscosity, plus structural stability to withstand shock and shearing stress. Complex‑soap and polyurea thickeners together with high‑viscosity base oils are widely used.

3. FUCHS Heavy‑Load Bearing Lubrication Solutions

FUCHS supplies multiple heavy‑duty bearing greases:

  • URETHYN MP 2: For bearings in road pavers, chemical process pumps, ventilators and compressors.
  • RENOLIT LX‑EP 2: For general‑purpose electric motors and construction machinery.
  • RENOLIT CXI 2: Excellent water resistance; for metallurgical rolling mills, paper‑making machinery and mining equipment.

III. Low‑Temperature Operating Conditions

1. Lubrication Pain Points

In cold‑storage facilities, cold‑chain conveyors, low‑temperature motors and outdoor northern‑climate equipment, low temperatures cause conventional grease to thicken sharply. Starting torque and running resistance increase, and in severe cases equipment cannot start.

2. Selection Key Points

Low‑temperature‑service grease requires synthetic base oils with low pour points and appropriate low‑temperature viscosity. It must retain low starting‑torque characteristics and reliable lubrication down to ‑40 °C or even below ‑80 °C.

3. FUCHS Low‑Temperature Bearing Lubrication Solutions

FUCHS provides wide‑temperature‑range options:

  • UNIFLOR 8951: Minimum operating temperature ‑90 °C; UNIFLOR 8961: down to ‑80 °C — ultra‑low‑temperature low‑torque greases.
  • UNIFLOR 8981R / 8922EL: Down to ‑65 °C with chemical‑corrosion resistance.
  • RENOLIT WTF 2: Down to ‑60 °C; for bearings in small automotive motors and cold‑chain conveyor rollers.
  • RENOCAL FN 745/94: Minimum service temperature ‑50 °C.
  • THERMOPLEX 2 HPL (‑40 °C minimum): For combined high‑speed and low‑temperature use in fans and machine tools; ensures safe cold‑start lubrication and keeps bearing temperature rise in check.

IV. Multi‑Environment Adaptation: Humidity, Dust, Corrosion and Special Clean‑Room Conditions

1. Humid and Dusty Environments

In conditions with high humidity, water spray and heavy dust, grease needs both water‑resistance and anti‑emulsification performance, plus structural stability against contamination.

  • RENOLIT CXI 2: Outstanding water resistance for metallurgical rolling mills and mining equipment.
  • TURMOGREASE LC 252: Excellent water‑repellency for high‑speed spindles.
  • RENOLIT PU EMB 2 and other polyurea‑grade products: Performs well in dusty‑environment general‑industrial electric‑motor and fan bearings.

2. Chemically Corrosive Environments

When exposed to acids, alkalis, solvents or corrosive media, perfluoropolyether‑based greases are preferred thanks to their chemical inertness:

  • GLEITMO 591 / 590: Long‑term lubrication under combined high‑temperature and corrosive attack.
  • UNIFLOR series (8981R, 8922EL etc.): Chemical‑corrosion resistant.
  • NYECORR 140: For corrosion‑prone components including corrugator rolls, film‑stretching equipment and ejector pins on injection‑moulding machines.

3. Special Conditions: Low‑Noise, Electrically‑Conductive, Vacuum and Hygienic‑Grade Service

  • Low‑noise applications (low‑noise motors, elevator traction machines): RENOLIT PU LNB PLUS 2, TURMOGREASE N 2 OR 4 deliver lubrication alongside noise suppression.
  • Against electric shaft currents: FUCHS ELC‑series conductive greases e.g. TURMOGREASE N 503 B ELC, featuring low‑resistivity properties.
  • Semiconductor, aerospace vacuum environments: NYETORR vacuum‑grade greases.
  • Food‑processing industry: CASSIDA food‑safe lubricants.
