Automotive oils that reduce carbon footprint without compromising performance

FUCHS’s range of circular lubricants that reduce carbon footprint goes on growing. The technology, known as ACT, is based on renewable, technology-driven solutions that unite high performance and sustainability. Our engine oils and automatic transmission oils are the most advanced products in the range to date.

Carbon footprint is a critical aspect of any company’s sustainability work these days. There are all kinds of ways to achieve improvements, and innovative lubricants have now been added to the list. The potential effects are huge, and can even halve the carbon footprint without compromising on performance.

“We have developed products based on a circular mindset, with raw materials that are either recycled or bio-based. The result is lubricants with the same or better performance, and environmental benefits built in,” says Johan Bolkéus, Product Manager Automotive at FUCHS.

The technology is called Advanced Circular Technologies, or ACT. To meet FUCHS’s requirements for ACT, a certain percentage of the product must be recycled – for instance by cleaning and re-refining the base oil – or it can also be bio-based.

And of course, reusing spent oil reduces the need to use new crude oil. This is a climate-smart approach, since the main carbon dioxide emissions in lubricant production arise specifically in the extraction and refinement of crude oil.

Quality is crucial

Around ten ACT products have been released to date, the first being FUCHS engine oils for heavy diesel engines in the machinery and transport sectors, and also transmission oils.

“Being able to offer our customers circular alternatives is exciting, and these products also have to be of the same high quality as other high-performance products.

The aim going forward is to continue developing our circular range, and replace more existing FUCHS products with ACT wherever we can. In the longer term, this will also include the latest engine technologies that have stricter specifications and approval processes. As always, we’re working closely alongside engine manufacturers.”

Johan stresses the importance of technology-driven development in FUCHS’s operations and regards high product quality as a natural guiding principle. And that’s worth repeating: our customers must always be able to rest assured that our circular products provide at least the same lubrication as other high-performance products. We don’t compromise!

ACT makes a difference
It is also equally important to highlight the environmental benefits – something customers can access through the online digital calculator on the FUCHS website. It shows how much an ACT product reduces carbon footprint compared to traditional oils.

“A company using 10,000 litres of TITAN TRUCK PLUS SAE 15W-40 helps to reduce the carbon footprint by almost 8.5 tonnes,” Johan explains. “That makes quite a difference!”

With ACT labelling, we want to make it easy for our customers to buy these products. And because we now offer a circular product of the same high quality as the one based on virgin oil, our customers can achieve their environmental goals without compromising on efficiency. That’s what we call moving your world in the right direction!

ACT – Our path to Advanced Circular Technologies

ACT or Advanced Circular Technologies sums up everything we do to transform our value chain from linear to circular. Starting with raw materials all the way through manufacturing, the use of our solutions and up to the end-of-life. Which is now bound to become a new beginning.

It’s time to ACT: Used oil gets a new life

At FUCHS, we strive to reduce our dependence on fossil raw materials, and also to mitigate the climate impact of our lubricant products throughout their life cycle. We are now taking a further step forward and launching ACT. It is a shift in focus from traditional fossil raw materials to recycled, bio-based ones.
